About JPS Tree Services
When was JPS Tree Services founded?
JPS Tree Services was founded in 2022. We are a family-owned and owner-operated company based in Wethersfield, CT, serving homes and properties within about 25 miles.
What kind of tree work do you specialize in?
Complex tree removal. We use cranes, spider lifts, and specialized machinery to take down large trees, trees in tight spaces, and trees close to homes and other structures.
Who will actually be working on my property?
A family-run, owner-operated crew. John Leon is involved in every job, so you deal with the people accountable for the work from your first call to the final cleanup.
Are you members of any industry organizations?
Yes. JPS Tree Services is a member of the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA), a national trade association for tree care companies.
Estimates, pricing, and scheduling
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Every estimate is free, with no pressure. We look at the work, answer your questions, and give you a clear price so you can decide what makes sense for your property and budget.
What happens during an estimate?
We look at the tree, its size and location, and anything nearby that needs protecting. Then we explain the work involved, the plan, and the price, so you know what to expect before any work begins.
How do I request an estimate?
Call us at (860) 996-1239 or fill out the form on our website with your address and a few details about the job.
How much does tree removal cost?
Every tree is different. The cost depends on the size and condition of the tree, where it is, how easy it is to reach, what is nearby, and what equipment the job needs. We give you a free estimate so you know the price before work begins.
Why do tree removal quotes vary so much between companies?
Because the work can vary. One quote may assume a crew climbing and dropping pieces by hand; another may include a crane or spider lift to protect a roof or fence. It is fair to ask each company what is included: equipment, cleanup, hauling, and stump grinding.
Does a crane or spider lift cost more?
Sometimes, because the equipment is specialized. On a tree close to a house, in a tight yard, or in poor condition, it can also be the safer choice and can help avoid damage that costs more to repair. We explain which approach we recommend and why.
How long does a tree removal take?
It depends on the size of the tree, how many trees are coming down, and how complex the site is. We go over the expected timeline with you when we give your estimate.
How soon can you come out?
For emergencies, we take calls 24/7. For routine removals, call us and we will tell you what our schedule looks like.
Do you offer any discounts?
Yes. Military members and first responders get 10% off. Mention it when you call or request your estimate.
Tree removal
How do I know if my tree needs to be removed?
Warning signs include dead or hanging branches, deep cracks in the trunk, fungus growing at the base, a lean that has gotten worse, or a tree growing too close to your home. If you are not sure, call us. We will take a look and tell you what we recommend, including if the tree can stay.
Can you remove a tree that is close to my house?
Yes. It is a big part of what we do. Cranes and spider lifts let us take these trees down in controlled sections while protecting your house and landscaping.
Can you remove a tree that is leaning on another tree?
Yes. Trees that are leaning on or tangled with other trees are under a lot of tension and can be dangerous. Our crew plans these removals carefully and uses specialized equipment to take them down safely.
What about a tree that looks bad but is not an emergency?
Call us before it becomes one. A tree with split limbs, a cracked trunk, or a new lean may be unstable. We can look at it, explain the risk, and tell you whether it can stay or should come down.
What if the tree is dead or dying from disease or insects?
Dead and declining trees can be brittle and unpredictable, which is when a crane or spider lift matters most. Many Connecticut ash trees, for example, have been killed by emerald ash borer.
Does the tree belong to me or my neighbor?
Trees on a shared property line can be complicated. If you are not sure whose tree it is, talk with your neighbor first, and we are happy to look at it with both of you and explain what the job involves.
What if the tree is on town property, near the road?
Trees along public roads are often the town’s responsibility, and Connecticut towns have a tree warden who oversees public trees. Before we touch a tree in the town right-of-way, we would recommend you call your town first.
Do you trim or prune trees?
Our main focus is tree removal. As part of spring clean up, we can trim back branches that were cracked or broken over the winter. Tell us what you need when you call and we will let you know if we are the right fit.
Cranes and spider lifts
What is a spider lift?
A compact lift that can reach trees in tight backyards without driving heavy equipment across your lawn. It lets our crew work at height safely, in places where a larger machine cannot fit.
What does a crane do on a tree job?
A crane lifts large sections of the tree over your house, fence, or pool, so nothing has to drop. It is what makes many removals near homes and structures possible.
Will a crane or spider lift damage my lawn?
We plan each job around access and protect your yard as much as we can. Spider lifts are designed for tight spaces and are easier on lawns than larger equipment. We explain how we will reach the tree and what to expect before we start.
Do you need to close the street for a crane?
Some crane jobs need extra space or traffic planning. We handle that as part of the plan and tell you what to expect when we give your estimate.
Storm damage and emergencies
What counts as a tree emergency?
Any time a tree or large limb has fallen on a home, vehicle, or structure, is blocking access to your property, or is cracked and could fall at any moment.
Are you really available 24/7?
Yes. Our regular hours are 7 AM to 6 PM, but we take emergency calls 24/7, including nights and weekends. Call (860) 996-1239 any time.
What should I do if a tree falls on my house?
Get everyone out of the affected area and stay away from the tree. If power lines are involved, call your utility company first. Then call us at (860) 996-1239.
What if the tree is touching power lines?
Stay far away and call your utility company first. Trees in contact with power lines need to be handled by the utility or crews it approves. Once the lines are safe, we can remove the tree and clean up.
Should I try to remove a fallen or damaged tree myself?
No. Fallen and damaged trees are often under tension and can shift or spring back when cut. Removing them without the right training and equipment can lead to serious injury or more damage to your property.
Can you help with storm cleanup, not just emergencies?
Yes. Storm clean up is one of our main services. We clear fallen trees and broken limbs from homes, vehicles, driveways, and yards so you can get back to normal.
Should I remove storm-damaged trees that are still standing?
A tree with split limbs, a cracked trunk, or a new lean after a storm may be unstable. We can look at it, explain the risk, and tell you whether it can stay or should be removed.
Do you offer emergency service outside Wethersfield?
Yes. Our 24/7 emergency service covers our full service area.
Will my insurance cover a fallen tree?
That depends on your policy and what the tree hit, so check with your insurance company. We can provide a clear written estimate and describe the work to help with your claim.
Stump grinding
What is involved in stump grinding?
A machine grinds the stump down below the surface of the soil. This removes the stump you see and trip over, so you can mow, reseed, or plant in that spot again.
What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding cuts the stump down below the surface and leaves the roots to break down naturally underground. Full stump removal pulls out the stump and roots, leaving a large hole and doing more damage to your yard.
Can I get the stump ground at the same time as the tree removal?
Yes. Just let us know when you request your estimate and we will include it.
Will the stump grow back?
In most cases, no. Some species can send up shoots from the remaining roots, and those can usually be cut back as they appear.
Can I plant where a stump was ground?
Yes. After grinding, the area can be filled with soil and used for grass, flowers, or a garden bed. If you are planting a new tree, it is usually best to choose a spot a few feet away from the old stump.
Cleanup and your property
Do you clean up after a tree removal?
Yes. A thorough cleanup is part of every job. We clear away the branches, wood, and debris so your property is left clean when we leave.
How do you protect my lawn and landscaping?
We plan access carefully, work around fences, driveways, and landscaping, and use equipment suited to the space. Spider lifts, for example, are made for tight yards.
How should I prepare my property?
Move vehicles, outdoor furniture, and anything fragile away from the work area, and let us know about sprinkler lines or other features we cannot see. Keeping children and pets inside during the job also helps keep everyone safe.
Do I need to be home during the work?
Not always. We walk the job through with you beforehand, so we know what to protect and where the tree is going.
