A stump left behind after a tree removal can be more than an eyesore. Stumps get in the way of mowing, create a tripping hazard and take up space you could be using for lawn, garden beds or a new tree.
Stump grinding is a practical way to get rid of a stump. A grinder cuts the stump down below the surface of the soil, removing the part you see without the large hole that digging out the whole stump would create.

The JPS difference
Leaving a stump in place may seem easier, but it can cause problems over time. Grinding it down gives you back usable space and makes your yard easier and safer to care for.
01
With the stump ground below the surface, you can mow right over the area without working around it or damaging your mower.
02
Stumps are easy to trip over, especially for kids and guests. Removing them makes your yard safer to walk and play in.
03
Once the stump is gone, the area can be filled in and used for new grass, a garden bed or another tree.
04
Old, rotting stumps can attract insects like carpenter ants and termites. Grinding the stump down removes that food source.

Good questions. Clear answers.
Answers to common questions about grinding stumps on your property.
What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Stump grinding cuts the stump down below the surface of the soil, leaving the roots to break down naturally underground. Full stump removal pulls out the stump and roots, which leaves a large hole and does more damage to your yard.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
In most cases, no. Once the stump is ground down, most trees will not regrow. Some species can send up shoots from the remaining roots, and those can usually be cut back as they appear.
Can I plant where a stump was ground?
Yes. After grinding, the area can be filled with soil and used for grass, flowers or a garden bed. If you want to plant a new tree, it is usually best to choose a spot a few feet away from the old stump.
How much does stump grinding cost?
The cost depends mainly on the size of the stump, how many stumps there are and how easy they are to reach. We provide a free estimate so you know the price before any work begins.
Is stump grinding hard on my lawn?
Stump grinding is far less disruptive than digging a stump out. The work is focused on the stump itself, and we clean up the area when we are done so the rest of your lawn stays in good shape.
